BiographyHistory

O'Rourke's parents were John Reginald (Jack) O'Rourke and Joan Elizabeth Deans O'Rourke. He attended schools at Tambar Springs and Armidale and studied philosophy and politics at the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales. O'Rourke worked on policy review and coordination for the Commonwealth Department of Aboriginal Affairs in Sydney and by 1995 the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra. He has published two works in Aboriginal studies: Raw Possum and Salted Pork : Major Mitchell and the Kamilroi Aborigines (1995) and The Kamilaroi Lands : north-central New South Wales in the early 19th century (1997).
