BiographyHistory

Ross was born in the fishing village of Moeraki and educated at Palmerston, Otago. He worked as a stock inspector for the Department of Agriculture, New Zealand. He is almost certainly the poor aspiring poet squashed in The Bulletin (12 March 1898 p.15) with the reply: 'D.M.R. (M.L.[Maoriland]): What weak, diluted verse you Maorilanders for the most part write. Looks as if you keep your feet warm and heads cool, instead of vice versa.'

Notes

  • AustLit does not attempt to index all of Ross's published work as he is primarily a New Zealand poet.
  • Ross's contribution (in is own hand) to A. G. Stephens's 'Australian Autobiographies', vol.2, states that he was born on 26 August 1865 and confirms his use of the pen name D. M. R.
