BiographyHistory

Theognis was a native of Megara and lived in the sixth century BC. Some 1389 lines survive under his name. These are really a succession of independent comments on life, both the poet's own life and life generally. He seems to have lost the ancestral property in the normal revolutions of the city state of the period.
