BiographyHistory

Journalist, author, and academic.

Sonya Voumard holds a Doctorate of Creative Arts from UTS, for a dissertation exploring the ethics of storytelling. Her journalism and fiction has been published in major Australian newspapers, magazines, and literary journals, including the Griffith Review and Meanjin.

In 2016, she published The Media and the Massacre, an account of media coverage of the Port Arthur massacre from 1996 to 2016, meditating on the nature of journalistic intent and the moral and social issues of telling cultural stories. In 2017, The Media and the Massacre was longlisted for the Stella Prize. In 2018, it was longlisted for the Kibble Award.
