1 The Death of Satire: Remembering Barry Humphries Barry Spurr , 2023 single work obituary (for Barry Humphries )
— Appears in: Quadrant , June vol. 67 no. 6 2023; (p. 25-28)
'A personal anecdote, to begin. In a letter to the press in late 2014, Barry Humphries asked: Has Australia gone slightly mad? I read in the London press of some poor professor in Sydney who has been persecuted and suspended for sending emails to a friend in which he employs outrageous vernacular epithets for race which would be offensive if they were not so clearly jocular' (Publication abstract)

1 Six Poems for Dr Kennedy Some Unpublished Work of Bruce Beaver Barry Spurr , 2021 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , April vol. 65 no. 4 2021; (p. 91-94)
'The prolific Australian poet Bruce Beaver (1928–2004), author of a dozen collections of verse, from Under the Bridge (1961) to The Long Game and Other Poems (posthumously published in 2005), was born in the Sydney seaside suburb of Manly and spent most of his life there. As is noted in the online Australian Poetry Library, Beaver’s work “had a considerable influence on the development of the ‘Generation of 1968’ and the ‘New Australian Poetry’ of the 1970s”. He won several major Australian literary awards, including the Grace Leven Poetry Prize (1970, for Letters to Live Poets), the C.J. Dennis Prize (1995, for Anima and Other Poems), the Fellowship of Australian Writers Christopher Brennan Award (1982), and the Patrick White Award (also 1982). Beaver was made a Member of the Order of Australia, in 1991, for service to literature. Yet his formidable achievement is less remembered today than that of other Australian poets of his era, such as Les Murray and Judith Wright.' (Introduction)
1 Censoring the Imagination Barry Spurr , 2016 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , November vol. 60 no. 11 2016; (p. 87-89)
'The article discusses censorship in literature in Australia. It mentions that literary censorship in the country is increasingly progressive and has attracted liberal attitudes through the 20th century as expressed by author Lionel Shriver in his [sic] keynote address to the Brisbane Writers Festival in September 2016. It cites the literary pieces where literary censorship is evident.' (Publication abstract)
