Lewis Rose Macleod moved with his parents from New Zealand to Sydney during the 1880s. He was initially a student at Newtown Academy and was later privately tutored by Jeremiah Sheridan Moore. Macleod worked in a variety of jobs, including office work, employment with a large railway contractor and dairy farming, before settling on a career as a journalist.
Macleod was associated with the formation of the Daily Shipping News Company and, in July 1896, took up the position of editor of the company's publications. These included the annual Wealth of New South Wales and the Producer and Exporter.
Macleod's prose and verse were published in a range of newspapers and journals including the Bulletin, the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Sydney Mail and the Truth. He also wrote For Queen and Empire! : An Illustrated History of the Patriotic Movement of 1899-1900 (1900) and The Glory Roll (1900).
