BiographyHistory

James Lionel Michael was a London-trained solicitor. He had a wide ranging education, was well versed in literature and philosophy, spoke several languages, and had an interest in science. During the 1850s, he became prominent within Sydney literary circles, where he was known as a brilliant conversationalist and lecturer.

Following bankruptcy, Michael moved his legal practice to the town of Grafton, on the Clarence River in northern New South Wales. Here he was a contributor to the Clarence and Richmond Examiner; he also wrote for the Sydney magazine, The Month: A Literary and Critical Journal.

Michael was, for a brief period, a mentor to Henry Kendall (q.v.), whom he employed as a clerk in his Grafton office in the years 1862-1863.
