Elaine Forrestal was born in Perth and has travelled widely. She was a kindergarten teacher for many years, but became a full-time writer after the success of her first books. Her first book, The Watching Lake, was published in 1991. She has since won awards from the Children's Book Council of Australia for Someone Like Me (1998) and Graffiti on the Fence (2000). Forrestal writes for the American magazine Highlights for Children and conducts workshops, for children and adults.
