BiographyHistory

Between 1954 and 1977 Len Evers wrote six novels. He is most admired for The Racketty Street Gang (1961), one of the first Australian children's books to have an immigrant child as the main character.

Evers dropped out of high school at fourteen, served in the Australian Army during World War II and later with the Occupation Forces in Japan. He matriculated after leaving the Army and attended Balmain Teachers College. He taught school between 1952-1959 and during this period wrote three adult novels. Evers's studies continued with an Arts Degree from Sydney University and a Diploma in Psychology. He left teaching to become a psychologist in the NSW prison service.

One of Evers's two books for children, The Racketty Street Gang, drew upon his experiences growing up in a Sydney waterside slum and on his experiences as a soldier.
