BiographyHistory

Willam Brown was apprenticed to a Melbourne wood engraver in 1859. In 1882 he travelled with his family to England and continued to work as an engraver and as an artist until returning to Australia in 1888. Brown undertook a range of illustrative work. In addition to engraving he produced showcards, labels and cartoons, and also worked as a photographer. (His cartoons appeared in Melbourne's Punch magazine from 1896 onwards.)
