BiographyHistory

Henry Hayter arrived in Australia from England at the age of 31. He became a senior statistician in the Victorian government in 1874, and from that year onward began publishing his Victorian Year Book, which he produced annually for the next 20 years. These yearbooks won international praise for their capacity to make statistics comprehensible and relevant to non-expert readers.

Hayter also wrote volumes of poetry and published writings inspired by his love of travel, including Notes of a Tour in New Zealand (1874), Notes on the Colony of Victoria (1875) and A Handbook to the Colony of Victoria (1884).
