Ron Shapiro came to Australia with his family when he was about seven, settling in Melbourne but soon afterwards moving to Adelaide. He graduated from the University of Adelaide and became a secondary school teacher. After completing a PhD in 1970 he taught at tertiary level until his retirement in 2000, including 21 years at the University of Western Australia. He now lives in Adelaide.
His father changed the family name from the Jewish, Shapiro, to the English name Shepherd following some difficulties he experienced during and after World War II. Since the death of his father in the mid 1990s the author has again used the name Shapiro.
