BiographyHistory

MacIlwaine's father Reverend Dr William MacIlwaine was Incumbent of St George's Church, Belfast. MacIlwaine spent several years in Australia. His stories and his novels reflect his experiences in Australia and reflect Australian bush life from the point of view of an English migrant. On returning to London he became a reader for the publisher Constable. Miller notes that he assisted other Australian writers, including Winifred James, and in 1908 James dedicated her Patricia Baring to MacIlwaine. Census records show that by 1911 He was resident in Hammersmith.
