Stutley was born in Adelaide of English parents. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in World War I, embarking on the HMAT Themistocles on 28 January 1916 and taking part in the fighting at Armentieres, Pozieres and Messines until injured. After experience as a bookseller in Adelaide, he returned to England and went into the antique business, travelling several times to China in search of antiques.
