BiographyHistory

Angelika Fremd came to Australia from Germany. She gained a Secondary Teachers Certificate from Mt Gravatt College of Advanced Education and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree. She taught English, History and Languages in Queensland and Papua New Guinea high schools from 1966 to 1986. In 1986 she was writer-in-residence at the Migrant Resource Centre, West End, Queensland and in 1988 for the Ethnic Communities Council, Hobart, Tasmania. More recently Fremd worked as the Multicultural and Community Literature Officer in Queensland.

Fremd was a co-founder of Phoenix Publications and co-founder and co-editor of the literary journal Outrider. Her work was read on ABC Radio, both in Tasmania and Melbourne, in 1987 and 1989; on Radio 4EB (Brisbane) in 1988 and 1989; on Radio 5UV (Adelaide) in 1987, and on Radio 4ZZZ (Brisbane) in 1989. She has read on numerous public occasions including at the Performing Arts Centre, Brisbane in 1986; at Warana Writers' Week, Brisbane, in 1988; at the Fiesta Writers' Concert, Brisbane in 1988 and 1989; at the Adelaide Multicultural Conference in 1989; for Refugee Week, Brisbane in 1989; for the Melbourne University Cultural Diversity Conference in 1989, and for Queensland University Feminist Book Week in 1989. In 2001 she contributed an overview of German poetry to the anthology Many Voices.
