BiographyHistory

Douglas Stewart dubbed Joseph Tishler 'Australia's Worst Poet'. Nevertheless, he was one of the Bulletin's most prolific contributors, accumulating close to three hundred poems between 1908 and 1953. Widely known as 'Bellerive', his poems appeared in the 'Answers to Correspondents' column, a space usually reserved for simple rejections. But his poems were regularly printed because of their distinctiveness and the affection readers had for this 'Poet Laureate of the Perpetually Rejected'. Tishler died in 1956. Several years later Douglas Stewart collected a selection of Tishler's verse in The Book of Bellerive (1961).
