Ebenezer Ward worked in London as a proofreader's boy prior to migrating to Melbourne in 1859. Ward became the theatre critic on the Melbourne
Herald and spent a short time in Adelaide prior to returning to Melbourne.
In 1861, Ward joined the South Australian Advertiser and, in 1862-1863, worked at Frederick Sinnett's Daily Telegraph. After undertaking various other roles, Ward returned to the Telegraph in August 1865 as editor. He later ran his own newspapers - the Northern Guardian and the Farmers Weekly Messenger.
Ward was active politically and lobbied for land reform. He was a member of parliament from the 1870s to the 1890s, at one time holding portfolios in agriculture and education.
In 1911, Ward moved to Perth and worked for the
Western Mail.
