Richard Marman was born in England and immigrated to Australia as a teenager. He served for nine years as a pilot with the Royal Australian Airforce, including a helicopter tour of Vietnam. Marman then flew commercial jets with Ansett Airlines and trained cadet pilots for Singapore Airlines. He left aviation in 2007 and completed at Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast, majoring in visual arts, graphic design and creative writing.
