Auber George Jones was born and raised in Van Diemen's Land. In 1854 he 'married Hanna Maria (d.1874), daughter of
John Joseph Moore, owner of the
Guardian'. Following a short period as an auctioneer and a connection with the
Hobarton Mercury, Jones moved to Melbourne (to study briefly for the Anglican priesthood) and then to New South Wales where he 'soon established himself as a successful pastoral speculator, buying and selling stations and stock'.
During the 1860s and 1870s Jones, by now based in Wagga Wagga, held a substantial number of properties. With Thomas Darlow, he established the Wagga Wagga Advertiser in 1868 and supported a number of civic enterprises. He also represented Murrumbidgee in the Legislative Assembly.
Jones moved to Grenfell in 1883. He died in Young and is buried in Wagga Wagga.
