BiographyHistory

George Henry Gisborne Varley came to Australia as a young boy with his parents, arriving in Sydney on 4 September 1856. Varley served an apprenticeship with the Maitland Ensign before working on the Wallsend Miner's Advocate (later the Newcastle Morning Herald).

Varley moved to Grafton where, in 1881, he became manager and part-owner of the Clarence and Richmond Examiner (and sole owner in 1885). He was also the newspaper's editor until 1905 when he moved to Sydney and established a metropolitan office for the paper.

Varley was active in church and community affairs. He was a director of the New South Wales Country Press Co-operative Co. Ltd and committee member of the Australian Provincial Press Association.
