Rudi Krausmann, born in Mauerkirchen, Austria, has said that because his mother was German and his father was Austrian he had felt like a stranger in his own country. He studied Economics in Vienna for two-and-a-half years and worked as a journalist for the Austrian newspaper, Salzburger Nachrichten. In Australia he has worked variously as a freelance writer and editor, a part-time tutor at the University of New South Wales, a language teacher in Sydney and Melbourne and a broadcaster on Radio 2EA.

Krausmann has considered himself to be a German poet writing in Australia and his theme, exile. In 1975 he founded Aspect: Art and Literature, in an endeavour to interrelate literature and the visual arts, and was editor of this periodical over several years. In 1977, he received a general writing grant and, in 1978, a fellowship from the Literature Board of the Australia Council. Krausmann was Creative Arts Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra during 1980. He briefly left Australia in the 1990s, but subsequently returned, spending most of his time living in Sydney.
