William Webb was born ‘in a town on the Western line – either Parramatta or Penrith. He was educated at Mudgee, and served an apprenticeship in the office of the local newspaper at Bourke’. Webb went on to establish about a dozen New South Wales country newspapers including the Nepean Argus (Penrith), the Wilcannia Times, the Campbelltown Herald, the Odd Fellow (Campbelltown, later Penrith), the Camden Times, the Liverpool Herald, the Bowral Free Press, the Burrawang Herald and the Picton Argus. Retiring from his newspaper pursuits around 1896, Webb became involved with mining operations.
His obituary in the Campbelltown Herald describes Webb as ‘a man of indomitable energy’ with ‘a genial disposition’ and ‘a most sympathetic nature’.
