BiographyHistory

Following his arrival at Hobart Town in 1833, Thomas Wilkinson was 'appointed religious instructor to the aboriginals of Flinders Island. He later ministered to the convicts in the Launceston district before re-locating to Port Phillip in 1840.

Wilkinson worked for a time as a clerk and was an 'early settler in Brunswick'. He moved to Portland in 1842 where, with James Swords, he established the Portland Guardian newspaper. In 1849 he extended his newspaper interests with the founding of the Warrnambool Examiner.

Wilkinson, a pioneer of Methodism, later returned to Brunswick where he 'gave land for the chapel in Sydney Road'. He was the first chairman of the Brunswick municipality in 1857 and its first mayor in 1867.
