BiographyHistory

During his youth and early adult years George Stevenson went to sea, studied medicine, worked on his brother's ranch in Canada, and visited Central America and the West Indies. Prior to his emigration to South Australia, Stevenson agreed to take up the position of editor on the colony's first newspaper, the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register. His opposition to the policies of early governors finally 'lost him a share in the government printing'. Stevenson withdrew his involvement with the Register in 1842, but 'returned to journalism three years later and revived the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register, changing Colonial to Mining in October 1847. The newspaper ceased publication in March 1852.

Stevenson's entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography concludes: 'As a journalist he was never pompous or pedantic, but his strong opinions were expressed with fearless vigour and provoked much controversy.'
