Notes

  • A C. G. is answered by the editor in the 'Answers to Correspondents' column of the September and October 1899 issues of the Children's Newspaper. In the October column the correspondent is referred to as Charlotte. Both answers contain acknowledgement on the receipt of pieces of writing and encouragement and advice including the following :

'We shake our grizzled head at you. You are setting out on your career as an author, and want to know what W.P.B, is. Charlotte, it is the grave of many grand ideas; it is where the too weak and the too strong find a common resting place ... Take Ethel Turner's Seven Little Australians, and The Family at Misrule and see what an Australian girl has done by writing about the things she knew about ...'

Unfortunately there is no real evidence to link C. G. with Charlotte Griffiths and the piece published is not mentioned in the correspondence.
