BiographyHistory

Kooshyar Karimi was born in Iran to a Jewish mother and a Muslim father. Having endured extreme deprivation as a child, he became a surgeon before being kidnapped in 1998 by the Iranian Intelligence Service. He was then tortured and forced to spy on Iranian Jews. Karimi and his family eventually escaped Iran, hid in Turkey and, in 2000, were granted political refugee status. The family then settled in Australia.

Karimi subsequently became an Australian citizen and a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
