Cinematographer, director, and script-writer.
Monton began his work in the film industry as a cinematography, working on a number of films with former Crawford Productions director Richard Franklin (including certain of Franklin's R-rated films from the 1970s, such as The True Story of Eskimo Nell and Fantasm), as well as television programs such as Cash and Company.
His work as a cinematographer includes a wide range of Australian films, including Newsfront, Long Weekend (1978 version), Snapshot, Thirst, Roadgames, Heatwave, Crosstalk, The Dunera Boys, and Double Sculls.
The directors with whom he has worked (in addition to Richard Franklin) include John Duigan, George Miller, Simon Wincer, Bruce Beresford, and Phillip Noyce.
As a director, his work includes the Everett De Roche-scripted surf film Windrider, the serial-killer drama Fatal Bond, and the revenge thriller Point of No Return.
From the mid-1990s, Monton began scripting films, beginning with his own film Point of No Return. Much of his script-writing has been for Canadian and American productions, usually low-budget thrillers such as Sweet Revenge and The Hit. His scripts include horror films Black Light and The Reaper and science-fiction film Space Fury (all Canadian productions).
In 2005, Monton undertook an Australian Film Commission Fellowship, exploring digital production and projection.
