Thomas Macdowell worked as journalist in London prior to his migration to Van Diemen's Land. In Hobart Town, Macdowell worked initially as editor of the Hobart Town Courier and, in 1841, he founded the Van Diemen's Land Chronicle (1841-1842). Macdowell was involved in several controversies leading to legal action, particularly involving fellow newspaperman Gilbert Robertson (q.v.) at the True Colonist.
Macdowell moved into insurance work following his newspaper career. He managed both the Tasmanian Fire, Life and Marine Insurance Co. and the Hobart Town and Launceston Marine Insurance Co. In 1847, he moved to Melbourne where he established a branch of the Derwent and Tamar Insurance Co.
