1 Tunnel Number Six Eugene Derby , 1897 single work short story science fiction
— Appears in: The Black Cat , June vol. 2 no. 9 (21) 1897; (p. 22-29)
Miners working an Australian vein of magnetic ore hear a voice calling for help. It seems to come from the solid rock. While trickery is ruled out, the repeated incident seems unfathomonable until a scientist investigates and succeeds in recording the voice. The explanation is that the magnetite acted as a telephone line. What was heard was an American prisoner in a Siberian iron mine (ctd. Bleiler p.192).
