Born in Barraba, New South Wales, at the end of World War II, Janita Cunnington moved with her family to Brisbane after her father's discharge from the army. Cunnington's first poetry was published in the Australian in 1960s. In later years, after travelling Europe with her husband and children, she took up writing poetry again. Cunnington worked as an editor for many years.Since 1996, she has been based on Stradbroke Island.
