Chris Collier moved with his family from Melbourne to the Brisbane suburb of Paddington at the age of three. He was educated at Milton State School and spent most of his working life at the Queensland Patents Office. For many years, Collier searched the Courier-Mail newspaper for new words and regularly provided a list of these to the Australian National Dictionary Centre in Canberra and to the Oxford English Dictionary headquarters in England.
