Rocky Star was based on the 1950s' Australian radio production Rocky Starr, in which intrepid space explorers Rocky Starr, Mitch Morgan, and Anne Vernon explored the universe in their spaceship, The Blue Streak.

According to production company Mysterious Light:

Rocky Star is a clever re-interpretation of a 1950's radio play. Starting with the original radio sound track a 12 hour Rocky Star adventure was edited down into 20 x 5 minute episodes. Songs from the 1940's were inserted where no song belonged. Actors lip-syncing and the scripts were rendered in a beautiful fifties black and white visual style. The result, a retro space musical that's sly fun.
