'Roger Osborne’s The Life of Such Is Life lives up to its title. After finishing this book, it’s hard to disagree with that descriptor of Furphy’s novel. It is alive. That inert object we have on our bookshelves is a living entity, and possibly more than most literary texts, the history of the origin of that physical text shows many similarities to the evolution of a species under selective pressure, to use some of the terminology Furphy would have been familiar with from his reading of Darwin. Moreover, for us in the twenty-first century, hypersensitive to the insights of ecology, we can see that the physical evolution of the printed text depended on the physical ecologies of the publishing and printing industries of Australia, Great Britain, and the United States of America, as well as the metaphysical environment of the “ecology of minds” (to use Gregory Bateson’s term) of the readers whose recorded and unrecorded readings over the past 120 years have created the text(s) (we have to include Rigby’s Romance and The Buln-buln and the Brolga) as we know them today. Osborne gives us a comprehensive account of the physical and metaphysical milieux which produced the phenomenon of Furphy’s grand opus in both its trinitarian and singular manifestations. If that sounds somewhat theological, it might not be out of place, given the number of claims that Such Is Life is our foundational literary narrative, akin to Don Quixote or Moby Dick, claims that surface regularly in the various attempts to keep Such Is Life in print, as Osborne shows.' (Introduction)

'Ken Gelder and Rachael Weaver have accomplished an impressive feat of scholarship in collecting and curating a record of settler interaction with the kangaroo from 1770 to 1900. It is not a pretty picture, though many of the fine illustrations in the volume do their best to make it so. This sort of exploration of a well-defined – if small – area of colonial Australian experience has only been possible with the expansion of the Humanities in Australian universities in the last fifty years in addition to the philanthropy of private citizens. This elegantly published book comes from the Miegunyah Press, an imprint of Melbourne University Press, which is funded by bequests from Sir Russell and Lady Grimwade. The Humanities are now threatened by the present Australian Government’s current tertiary education policies which will make such research in the Humanities extremely difficult. This book exemplifies the character of research we will sadly lose as a result.' (Publication abstract)

'Kenneth Slessor's first published poem at the age of 16 was in the Bulletin (Goin'', 19 July 1917) and was a tribute to a dying Australian soldier after the Anzac landings. For the sixteen year-old, no doubt reflecting C.E.W. Bean's influence, the individual death and the wider military defeat are redeemed by the prospect of joining his mates in death and glory on another front, and as he leaves this world the soldier imagines the [sic] he hears the surf at Manly and the sights of Sydney Harbour. Slessor finished school as the Armistice was signed, but not before publishing two more poems on the war -'France' 1918' and 'Jerusalem Set Free' - both celebrating the Anzac tradition and seeing purpose and sense in those years of awful conflict.' 'Gladys Fawcett, a 38 year-old war widow and journalist, is sent by the Sydney Morning Times to Newcastle, NSW, where she investigates the fractious world of Trade Union politics. She stumbles across a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 Royal Visit to Australia. Nick Hawes, ex-bomber pilot, wounded soul, poet and ASIO operative is also on the case. They bond over Schopenhauer and (surprisingly) fall in love. Written in sixteen 5,000 word episodes that mimic the serial novels of the times, Out of Print captures the Zeitgeist of Cold War Australia with its fierce politics and personal lives whose intended trajectories have been fractured by the Second World War.' 'This paper is an attempt to read the original 1897 Such is Life from what remains in accessible printed form. It is argued that the 1897 version differs markedly from the 1903 version in three ways: location, argument, and the character of Tom Collins. The conclusion is that it was neither a ‘bush epic’ nor a ‘proto-modernist text’, but closer to a nineteenth-century urban comedy of manners.' (Author's abstract)
