Traci Williams is a Wakka Wakka woman on her mother's side and was educated in Rockhampton.
She began her career at SBS in Sydney before moving to the ABC. She has worked as a diplomat with the Australian foreign service and then with Qantas managing their Indigenous programs and has travelled to Canada and the United States of America on a Churchill Fellowship.
She was the first Indigenous Australian to study at Cambridge University as part of the Wolfson College Press Fellowship Program. In 2011 she was appointed as a member of the New South Wales Premier's Expert Advisory Council for Women.
Williams has a Masters Degree in International Relations.
