James Bell travelled to Adelaide, South Australia on the Planter, departing from London on 19 November 1838. During his sea voyage, Bell maintained a diary, intended for the eyes of a female friend in the United Kingdom. Bell died from a 'brain infection' one year after his arrival in South Australia and his journal was mislaid. It was eventually 'found on a market stall and auctioned at Bonham's, where it was acquired by the State Library of South Australia'.
