A Canberra-based playwright, performance poet, reviewer and producer of cabaret events, Hal Judge has performed poetry on ABC radio and at many venues in Canberra, Braidwood, Melbourne, Sydney, Byron Bay, Lismore, Darwin as well as in Indonesia. He featured as a guest of the Tasmanian Readers' and Writers' Festivals in 2000 and 2003. Judge also appeared at Wordstorm (the Northern Territory Writers Festival) in 2004, the Ubud Writers Festival in 2005 and 2007, and the Jakarta and Palembang International Poetry Festival in 2006.
In 2007 Judge undertook an Asialink Arts Management Residency in Yogyakarta. He also initiated and ran a series of poetry workshops for inmates of Cooma Jail in 2007. He has been employed as Communications Officer for the ACT Writers Centre, as Manager for Halstead Press Publishers (Canberra Branch) and as book marketing representative for the Australian Book Group. In late 2010, Judge was appointed the first development officer for Writing Australia (q.v.). In 2011 he became the Australian Capital Territory director of Australian Poetry Ltd.
Judge is the brother of the Hon. Virginia Judge (q.v.).
