BiographyHistory

Jon Spence grew up in Georgia, USA, and studied and taught at the University of Georgia. He went on to gain a PhD (on Jane Austen) at King's College, London and established a career as a literary critic. Spence taught in Saudi Arabia and Japan before settling in Australia following a visit in 1998. He drew international attention with his 2003 biography Becoming Jane Austen.

Spence became an Australian citizen in early 2011.
