BiographyHistory

Donald Munro was the son of Edward Munro, whose World War I diaries feature in Diaries of a Stretcher Bearer.

Donald Munro had a long career in education that included his appointment as Head of the English Department of the Queensland Teachers College and three years in the Commonwealth Office of Education Unesco Secretariat. He then moved to the University of Queensland where he was the first Director of the University's Institute of Modern Languages and later, Deputy Registrar. He has been active in the music and theatre worlds of Brisbane and in 1978 was appointed Founding Chairman of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on the South Bank of the Brisbane River, a post he held for thirteen years. He became a Member of the Order of Australia in 1985. He was President to the Musica Viva in Queensland for eight years and was a regular writer on music for publications like The Bulletin and The Australian. He was also Chairman of the ABC (National) Music Advisory Committee in Sydney and was a member of the Council of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and of the Board of the first Biennial Music Festival in Brisbane.
