Born in Scotland, Williams immigrated to Australia as a young child, and grew up in Geelong, Victoria. Before taking up writing, he worked as a production designer in television, including Hey, Hey, It's Saturday, Sale of the Century, and The Paul Hogan Show. He lives in rural Victoria.
