1 Colonial Circumstances, or, Ups, Downs, and Ups T. M. A. , 1873-1874 single work novella John Plimsole, a Sydney-side squatter, builds his homestead, Wanwarra, in Victoria in 1848 for his wife Maggie and daugter Mattie. In 1851 gold is discovered very nearby and he profits from meat sold to the diggers. He meets a friend from England, John Cullen, on a trip to property and the family move to Melbourne, Plimsole falling into the coils of Jonas Cotes to whom he promises his daughter, Mattie, as wife.
