BiographyHistory

Hinde Ena Burstin describes herself as a feminist, a lesbian, a woman with a disability, and a political activist. She says that her commitment to writing in Yiddish is 'not just an artistic choice because Yiddish is a beautiful emotional language, but it's also a very political choice' [Source: Voices & Spaces, p. 37.]

An Australian-born Yiddish-English writer and translator, Burstin's poetry, short stories, feature articles, and reviews have been published in the United States, Canada, and Australia. A researcher of Yiddish literature, with a focus on Yiddish women poets, she has lectured extensively in Australia, as well as in the United States, Canada, and Belgium.

After working as a research associate in the Department of Hebrew, Biblical, and Jewish Studies at the University of Sydney, Burstin worked in the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University.
