Ed Byrne has had a career as an academic, neurologist, and neuroscientist.
The son of a general practitioner, he was raised in northeast England before arriving in Australia at the age of fifteen. He graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1974 with a medical degree (with first-class honours). After moving to London in 1981 to complete a research fellowship in clinical neurology, he returned to Australia in 1983, aged thirty-one.
He has held a number of positions, including Professor of Experimental Neurology at the University of Melbourne; Dean of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University; Vice Provost and Executive Dean of Biomedicine at University College London; and Vice-Chancellor and President at Monash University.
