Brian Croke graduated from Macquarie University with a first-class Honours degree in 1974, and from Oxford University with a Ph.D. in 1978. He has also been awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa from Macquarie University.
A scholar of Byzantine history, he has been Executive Director of the Catholic Education Commission (NSW), Adjunct Professor of History at Macquarie University, and Honorary Associate in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney.
