BiographyHistory

John Pitson was a student at Slough Secondary and Harrow County schools in England. He joined Her Majesty's Stationery Office at Harrow Press as an apprentice compositor before serving in the RAF during World War II.

Migrating to Australia in 1964, Pitson joined the Government Printing Office in Canberra where he was tasked with implementing 'the recommendations of the joint select committee on parliamentary and government publications'. Pitson was among those responsible for the first edition of the Australian Style Manual. He later became the director of typography of the Australian Government Publishing Service.

Pitson retired in 1978 and took up volunteer work with the Australian Executive Service Overseas Program.
