Luke Slattery is a journalist, culture writer and book critic. He is has been the editor of the Education Section of the Australian Financial Review and his work has also appeared in the Australian, the Age, the (UK) Spectator, Times Literary Supplement, and the International Herald Tribune. Formerly higher education editor at The Australian, The Age and the Financial Review, he was the recipient of the Higher Education Journalist of the Year Award, as well as the European Union journalist award, and the Australia Council's Keesing writing fellowship in Paris.
In addition to his journalism, Slattery has published long-form non-fiction, including dating Dating Aphrodite : Modern Adventures in the Ancient World. His first novel, Mrs. M, was published in 2017: it is an imagined history of Elizabeth Macquarie, set over one long sleepless night. Slattery had previously covered similar terrain in his non-fiction work The Dismissal, which mapped the collaboration of Lachlan Macquarie and architect Francis Greenaway.
Slattery undertook doctoral studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
