John Probert grew up in the Riverina town of Griffith, New South Wales. He graduated in economics from the University of Sydney and went on to work with Ford motor company. Probert also undertook the task of moving the Australian Tennis Open, sponsored by Ford, from Kooyong to its later home at Melbourne Park.
