Ray Koppe grew up in South Africa and migrated to Australia in 1960, four years after she married. When the marriage ended, in 1977, Koppe trained as a secretary and office manager. She took up work with the Copyright Council and then with the Australian Society of Authors ASA). In the final decade of her life, she adminstered the ASA's Benevolent Fund.

During her long assocation with the ASA, 'Koppe made strong and lasting friendships with writers of all ages' and, as an administrator, worked with great determination to advance the welfare of writers.
