BiographyHistory

Frank Wilson was a Wathaurung (Wadda wurrung) man and was based in the area around Lake Burrumbeet and Ballarat. Wilson also lived for a time on Ercildoune Station and took his European surname from Sir Samuel Wilson, the property owner.

'On 22 September 1896, Frank Mullawallah Wilson was found ill near the Burrumbeet railway station. He died next day in the Ballarat Base Hospital. Due to his status as the last of the Wathaurung in the Ballarat area, his funeral, on 26 September, attracted a large crowd. In 1897, The Australian Natives Association, with the help of the municipal council, raised the present monument over his grave.'
