BiographyHistory

Mennell was a journalist and biographer. Following his arrival in Australia, he worked on a number of Victorian country and metropolitan newspapers, including a stint as sub-editor and leader writer at The Age. He left Australia in 1882, but maintained his connections in the colonies, and returned on a number of occasions. He is perhaps best known in Australia for his Dictionary of Australasian Biography (1892). He was editor and proprietor of the London newspaper, the British Australasian and New Zealand Mail, from 1892 until shortly before his death.
