Educated at Abbotsleigh Girls School in Sydney, Susan Horwitz later gained degrees from the University of NSW, Stanford University, and the University of California. Prior to joining the family company, she held senior roles in radio broadcasting in the USA, including Vice President and Executive Director of Western Public Radio (San Francisco). Horwitz also served as a panellist for the National Endowment for the Arts, Media Division and InterArt Programme, Washington, D.C. In 1987, she was appointed to the position of director of Horwitz Publications (q.v.). A major shareholder in the company, she also later served as the Director of Operations, leading up to the company's sale to Wolseley Media in 2007.
In addition to her career as a publisher, Horwitz has served as a director of the Bell Shakespeare Company (q.v., Sydney); Lifeline-Harbour to Hawkesbury (Sydney); The Public Broadcasting Foundation of Australia (Melbourne); and The Academy of Media and Theatre Arts (San Francisco). She is also a Life Member of the Northcott Disability Services in NSW and a Patron of Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney. Horwitz was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2003, for services to Australian society in business leadership.
